Twitch is a livestreaming platform. It began as the game-focused side of Justin.tv. The New York Times reported that the founders split that side off in 2011 and introduced Twitch at the E3 game show, with Emmett Shear as chief executive.[1]

Amazon agreed to buy it in 2014. Reuters reported a price of about $970 million in cash, announced on 25 August 2014, and said a person close to the deal put the total over $1 billion once retention agreements were counted.[2] Reuters said more than 55 million unique visitors had watched more than 15 billion minutes on Twitch in July 2014.[2] That is one month, twelve years ago. It is not the size of the service today.

What a size claim means[edit]

Public talk of Twitch's size usually means concurrent viewers, people watching at the same moment, and concurrent channels, people broadcasting at the same moment. A registered account is a different number. A follower total on one channel is a third number. TwitchTracker publishes the public counts. Twitch's creator dashboard is the source for a channel's own revenue and unique viewers. This wiki does not treat the tracker as the dashboard.

Kick, which launched in 2023, competes for the same kind of broadcast. The BBC reported that Kick was offering creators 95 percent of subscription revenue against Twitch's 50 percent.[3] The split is a rate. It does not say which service has the larger audience.
